Necessary Evils?

It seems our foods are being altered to account for yield, but not so much concern given to quality, at least that’s how it feels in the United States.

When I was a wee tot living with my mother, we didn’t really have many of the things we were supposed to have. We had some cool stuff, but at the price of not having necessities sometimes. I understand why that was the case now, but geez, it wasn’t something I could make sense of back then. In one of those parental moments, I was telling my daughter about life “back in my day” as she looked out of the passenger side window ignoring me. The topic was food and fruits in general, but every now and then she’d ask me about candy. What’s really strange is her concept of “how old I am” is all kinds of whacky. On one hand she says “daddy, you’re not that old” and then on the other when I tell her how much candy cost when I was her age, she reacts like I got my receipts on papyrus or something.

One of the things I mentioned in this conversation was the difference in grapes, strawberries, and peaches from the 1980’s to the 2020’s. She has to take my word for it (and she doesn’t by the way) but folks my age and older know that produce in general tasted better back then. There was no section for organic food…because what else would it be? Even now, organic just seems to be a price multiplier because I bought some organic grapes and regular grapes for slightly cheaper, they tasted the same, I just paid a dollar more for the organic bunch. I know there are rules regarding the organic label, but to me it seems like smoke and mirrors if I’m being honest (and I am).

That conversation led to a call back later in the day and my wife started googling things that taste better now than before. Brussel sprouts came up. I couldn’t confirm that because I never had a Brussel sprout as a child. However, the agricultural scientists somehow made them taste better over time, through genetic modification and all that. That led me to start googling stuff too and I came across this old article about domesticated fruits before and after basically. Civilization has been genetically modifying foods for millennia! Of course reasons vary, but it was an aha moment for me. Global society is wasting far too much time trying to kill each other or dominate other places, when they need to focus on making strawberries and grapes taste better than they do now.

As the world population continues to balloon out of control, there is a need to feed everyone obviously. That means faster crops are needed, artificial ingredients, genetically modified everything and meat pumped full of steroids and antibiotics. It seems our foods are being altered to account for yield, but not so much concern given to quality, at least that’s how it feels in the United States. I’m not a farmer so I can’t speak to all of the tricks of their trade, but to a certain degree in the U.S. everything is about consumption and convenience. If any of you have had the luxury to travel extensively or live abroad you may know that the rest of the planet is different in a way that makes more sense actually. Smaller portions, quality ingredients, and as a result, fewer incidents of cancer.

Maybe, and this is a complete left turn from where you may have been expecting this to go, but maybe this is intentional. Like a means of thinning the herd if you will. It’s not cool, I’m not saying nations should be poisoning their populations with food or anything like that, but at the same time, the world population is pretty high. Based on natural resources, air quality, finances, public service demands, there’s no way that it can be sustained with current trends. These governments aren’t usually selecting citizens to poison that I know of…they do here in the U.S., but they give their populations access to the poison, and they let them consume it over time and bada bing bada boom, traffic is lighter.

They’re listening to Bill now

Sure, I hope that isn’t the case, but based on my nonscientific observations, it’s plausible. We have McDonald’s cheeseburgers that are preserved like Vladimir Lenin with no effort at all. I like McDonald’s fries like the rest of society, but we have to admit those burgers can’t be good for our health in any way. That in mind, let’s assume the organic label really has more value than increasing the price of groceries. Being able to afford the quality food versus the poisoned food is out of reach for a lot of families with greed at the top being what it is so they’re thinning the herd from the ground up. As if a society filled with rich people is going to be amazing. They’ll have a bunch of money and artificial intelligence bots doing things like driving taxis, making food, and checking them out at the grocery store. That way, all of those menial tasks they don’t want to do are still covered and their lives are largely unaffected. Hmm, makes you wonder about the widespread adoption of self-checkout, driverless taxis and automated McDonald’s that are now popping up.

It’s a smart gamble by these soulless bastards because if the poison doesn’t kill them, the lack of funds and increasing violence just might. You got people doomsday prepping in their basements, loading the cabinets with canned goods and ammunition while the decision makers just let it play out. I don’t know, maybe I’m crazy for thinking it, or maybe I’m crazy for still eating fast food and regular bananas even though I think it.
